Sophie El-Assaad

Sophie El-Assaad est une et conceptrice et artiste interdisciplinaire basée à Montréal. Elle se spécialise dans le costume et travaille dans les domaines du théâtre, de la danse et du cirque.

Son héritage libanais et l’expérience qu’elle a vécue en grandissant au Moyen-Orient ont eu une influence considérable sur sa pratique personnelle qui explore les thèmes de la migration et de la mémoire.

Les fibres, les objets et la vidéo/photographie d’archives sont des supports qui inspirent son approche, que ce soit dans la conception, la création de performances ou l’art visuel.

À la recherche du potentiel de poésie entre le corps humain et les matériaux qui l’entourent, elle voit le costume comme une sculpture en mouvement, où les matériaux détiennent une agence avec d’excitantes possibilités de disruption qui peuvent agir comme des initiateurs de création.
Depuis 2017, elle a reçu quatre prix du Montreal English Theatre Awards et a été nommée finaliste pour le prix Jovette-Marchessault en conception. Elle travaille actuellement à l’obtention d’une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’université d’Ottawa.

Based in Montréal, Sophie El-Assaad is an interdisciplinary artist and designer. She specializes in costumes, working in theatre, dance and circus.
Her Lebanese heritage and upbringing in the Middle East have made a considerable impact on her personal work, as she explores themes such as migration and memory.

Supports like fabrics, objects and archival photography/video influence her approach, whether its in design, performance creation or visual arts.

In search of the poetic potential between the human body and the various materials that surround her, El-Assaad sees the costume as a moving sculpture, where materials have agency, offering exciting possibilites for disruption that can spark creation.

Since 2017, she has received four prizes at the Montréal English Theatre Awards, and was nominated for the Jovette-Marchessault award for design. El-Assaad is currently completing a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa.
